In 2024 it will again be possible to study medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Bulgaria. And the chances are good, even if you don’t have an ideal high school diploma. As always, we recommend that it is best to prepare this step for the long term. But even those who decide at short notice have a chance of getting their desired study place, but they should know the registration dates. Application deadlines for the winter semester 2024/25
If you would like to study at one of the three medical universities in Bulgaria where studies can begin in the winter semester, you should keep the following deadlines in mind for the latest possible application:
- The registration deadline for the Medical University of Plovdiv is August 20, 2024 (date for registration for the last entrance test). There is also the option of taking part in an earlier entrance test. All tests take place online. The semester starts on October 1, 2024.
- The registration deadline for the Medical University of Sofia is September 10, 2024 (for transfer students: August 20, 2024). Entrance tests will take place on September 13th (online). The final ranking will be published a few days later. Semester start: October 14, 2024 (for first semester students).
- Registration deadline for the Medical University of Varna: The last entrance test (biology / chemistry) will take place on September 3rd, 2024 – earlier test options are available, all tests take place online. Semester start: October 1, 2024 (expected).

Application deadlines for the summer semester 2025
If you prefer to study in Bulgaria at a medical university in the summer semester of 2025 (only the University of Pleven is an option), you should know the following application deadlines:
- Registration deadline for the Medical University of Pleven: October 1st, 2024, entrance tests from the end of September to November in Pleven on site or online
Semester start: February 1, 2025
Important: Registration in Pleven ends almost six months before the start of the semester, so plan particularly early. In exceptional cases, it is also possible for us to secure a study place for our customers after the application deadline has expired. Talk to us about it!
Please note that all documents must be submitted to the Bulgarian university in the correct form (partially translated and legalized) by the respective registration deadline. Small formal errors can result in the application not being accepted. And in our experience, at least another two months should be allowed for the preparation of the documents in Germany or the respective country of origin, the sending of the documents to Bulgaria and the necessary and not insignificant post-processing. So make sure that your dream course of study doesn’t fail because you missed a deadline!
EU citizens (i.e. applicants with citizenship of an EU member) have it somewhat easier than applicants from so-called third countries – for the latter, an additional check of the application documents by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education is mandatory, which takes additional time. This means that earlier registration deadlines apply, which you should definitely note!
Attention transfer students!
If you want to start a higher semester (change university), you are well advised to submit your application earlier than first semester students. The start of studies in the higher semesters sometimes takes place before the official registration deadline – and some time and energy should also be planned for the process of recognizing the achievements achieved abroad! The administrative effort is significantly greater here. EU citizens (i.e. applicants with citizenship of an EU member) have it somewhat easier than applicants from so-called third countries – for the latter, an additional check of the application documents by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education is mandatory, which takes additional time.
