Medical studies in Pleven

Pleven is the seventh biggest city in Bulgaria and with nearly 150.000 inhabitants an important industrial location in the north of the country. The city offers a wide range of cultural attractions like theatres, an opera house, a philharmonic hall or scientific institutions. A well known and frequently attended sight is the Pleven-Panorama which shows parts of the Russian-Ottoman war.

The medical university of Pleven was founded in 1974 and is therefore a relatively young Bulgarian medical university. This university has a strong international focus. That is the reason why many students, not only from Bulgaria, but also from different countries are doing their studies there. 500 from about 2,000 students are from more than 25 different countries. Most of them are from Great Britain.

The medical university of Pleven is divided in three faculties – the faculty for medicine, public health and health care. There are also courses on the Medical College and the Department of Language as well as Specialized Training. At this College German, Latin, English and French are offered not only for students, but also for physiotherapists, social workers, radiologists and medical-technical assistants.

Pleven with a background as one of Bulgaria’s industrial centres is located 160 kilometres north of the capital Sofia. It is 30 kilometres south of the river Danube and the bulgarian-romanian border in the valley of river Tuchenitsa. Neighbouring clities are Lovetch and Gabrovo. Traveling to Pleven in Bulgaria is relatively straightforward, with several options available. The most common way is by train, as Pleven is well-connected to major cities like Sofia and Varna via the Bulgarian State Railways network. Additionally, buses run regularly from various cities across Bulgaria to Pleven’s central bus station. For those arriving by air, the nearest airport is in Sofia, from where travelers can take a train or bus to reach Pleven.

Living situation

The accommodation costs are compared to cities like Plovdiv, Varna or Sofia relatively inexpensive. This does not mean that the supply is necessarily of lower quality. Beside of very affordable student accommodation facilities there are shared flats and single apartments future students can pick from. And mroe recently, private investors have seen the potential of running upper-priced dorm in close range to the university.
